The Gospel Potential of the Belt Road Initiative

The Gospel Potential of the Belt Road Initiative

In 2013, Chinese leader Xi Jinping proposed a bold vision for globalisation and economic development – the Belt Road Initiative (BRI) also known as “One Belt, One Road”. More than just a political move, what does this mean for Christians and Christian mission?

10 things about Nahum

10 things about Nahum

Let's be honest. Nahum is probably not our top pick for a daily devotion. In fact, many of us might have been surprised to hear that there is such a book in the Bible. So what exactly is this book about? Why is it important for us to study it?

An eye on the world (26 Feb-2 Mar 2018)

An eye on the world (26 Feb-2 Mar 2018)

As we live in a world that is still filled with wars or the potential for wars, our hearts are burdened and heavy. But we are also reminded that God is also at work and there are those in our midst that are still standing up for the downtrodden, outcast and advancing the rights of men and women in areas where their rights are restricted.

Singaporeans received news of this year's Budget this week. It was a reminder of the need to have good governance and leaders that are wise enough to rule now, but also plan for the future. Yet, this is not the case in many parts of the world. Events of this week remind us that it is also important to pray for Christians to pray for our government and also to be in government to help enact good laws.

Bible Reading 101

Bible Reading 101

Do you want to read the Bible but just don't know where to begin? Or have you resolved to read and then fizzled out after? You're not alone, and this is a struggle that most, if not all of us have. But struggling does not mean we give up in despair! In this post, we've put together some practical helps and resources to get us started.

An eye on the world (12-19 Feb 2018)

An eye on the world (12-19 Feb 2018)

We thank God for a CNY weekend which comes as a much-needed and welcomed break for many. But this weekend can and is also a good time for us to pray and bring our world to God. This week we read of a world where the threat of war and shootings is a reality for many. In Singapore, we just commemorated Total Defence Day, another reminder that the peace and comfort we enjoy now cannot be taken for granted. And ultimately, let us remember that God has placed each one of us where we are in this time "that (we) should seek God" (Acts 17:26-27).

An eye on the world (5-12 Feb 2018)

An eye on the world (5-12 Feb 2018)

Ps 33:13-17 reminds us that the LORD "looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man" and knows. As Christians, we might be tempted to despair when we look at our world, or might want to depend on our own schemes and solutions to solve all the world's problems. As we read the news this week, reading of natural disasters, political conflict, and even opportunities for Christian witness, let's also read it with a heart of dependence on God, coming to Him in prayer!

An eye on the world (22-28 Jan 2018)

An eye on the world (22-28 Jan 2018)

1 Thess 5:17 gives us a bald, straightforward command: “pray without ceasing”. The positive instruction is clear: pray. The negative instruction is just as clear: don’t stop. Are we doing that? How should we be thinking about our world, our nation and the environment around us? We believe that in order to obey this command, apart from a prayerful spirit and God-centered reliance, we could also use more help by holding the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. This new initiative aims to do just that — tracking key news events and applying a Biblical worldview toward those events and promoting us to pray. With this in hand, let’s set aside some time and faithfully, pray.

The Bible and Our Reading: Reflections from the Fellowship Survey

The Bible and Our Reading: Reflections from the Fellowship Survey

Ps 119 gives us a picture of a man who delights in the law of the Lord, and desires it. What will that person look like? We used Ps 119 as a basis for our reflection, as we compared and contrasted our own attitudes towards Bible reading, evident from the Fellowship Survey we did in Oct 2017.

Wrapping up 2017

Wrapping up 2017

This is often a busy time of the year, and amidst the flurry of activities, we also tend to be pensive and reflect on the year that has just passed. We take some time to reflect on all that has happened in 2017, and thank God for His blessings and provisions!

Studying Christ in Handel's Messiah

Studying Christ in Handel's Messiah

“Hallelujah!” means praise — and for most Christians raised in the Western tradition, is associated with George Frideric Handel’s “Halleuljah Chorus” in his composition, “Messiah”, a common Christmas-time favourite.

But why exactly do we sing “Hallelujah” about Christ?
