These days, we have coined the term “Adulting” to describe what previous generations has just accepted as the normal part of growing up and being a responsible adult. Things like paying taxes, paying bills, getting one’s first house or doing the laundry now fall into this category and is often recorded on social media.

Often too, we struggle to “adult” in the church. In many of our churches, we have drawn up categories such as “youth” and “young adults” but when do we effectively transition into an “adult”? These were categories not present in the early church, and the Bible doesn’t speak directly to our modern categories and struggles. Thus, many of us struggle with “adulting” in the church. How can a young person strive for godliness in the church?

This post by Tim Challies, titled “Young Christian, set an example” is a timely word for many of us. Drawing from 1 Tim 4:12, Challies goes on to unpack what it means for the young (in age) Christian to pursue godliness and set an example for the church in the various areas illustrated in the verses:

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

We encourage you to read this article, and think about how this can be applicable and obeyed in your life too. How can you not be despised for your youth, but set an example for the believers in your church in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity?
