Thus far, we have seen how Scripture is sufficient for salvation, clear for us to understand, and authoritative. In this study, we will see how it is necessary. God has chosen to reveal to us His mystery of salvation, and His revelation is out of His love for us.
This is our series called “Truth for trusting” or “Creeds”. We’ll take a look at passages in the New Testament that are an expression of our faith, almost like formulas, which are always handy because formulas express profound truths in a compact, simple, easy way.
This week we are in 1 Corinthians 15, a well-known passage. We’ll look at the first five verses, and we’ll see another formula, especially in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
We continue our series that on relationships and we will look at what the Bible says about singles and marrieds in today’s study. We will split 1 Corinthians into two sections, with two underlying arguments. Before we go on, just a note — today’s text is like a tree with many weird branches, and we could be trapped and caught in the branches. But we press on and ask God for His help to understand.
In the past four studies, we’ve seen how the Bible presents God as a God who speaks. From beginning to end, He is a God who relates with human beings and acts for them using words. We’ve looked at the kinds of words God uses and some of the qualities of those words – the sufficiency, clarity and authority of Scripture.
In this study, we look at a fourth quality – the necessity of Scripture. His words are necessary; we cannot do without it. The purposes for those words cannot be achieved without those words. They are needed and we desperately need them.
The resurrection is indeed a weighty truth. We have been looking at the truth and power of the resurrection previously. In this study, we continue our study of 1 Corinthians, looking at verses 35 to 58, and later at Romans 8. Through this study, we aim to highlight how the resurrection is a cosmic event; an event of grander scale, above the resuscitation of a physical body.
Christians get queasy when they talk about the resurrection. We often think of it so abstractly that it holds little applicative power for our present. Or we wonder if any rational, educated, and progressive person can believe in the resurrection.
Well, the answer is yes. And Paul tells us that the resurrection is more than something for forward-thinking. The implications of the resurrection press into our present. Let’s see what Paul has to tell us in 1 Cor 15!
We are going to walk through Scripture to construct a spine to understand the person of the Holy Spirit and to apply it to truths. The big idea in this study is that the Holy Spirit is God, worthy of worship and praise, and He intends for us to experience Him clearly. We will anchor our study in John 14-16 because Jesus lays out what we need to know about the Spirit.
